Professor Sara Sternberg Greene's research at Duke Law reveals that many low-income Americans, despite being eligible for free legal aid, avoid seeking it due to deep-seated fears, misconceptions about the civil justice system, past negative experiences, and a prevailing sentiment of self-sufficiency.
